Western Tungsten Supply Is Scarce and Underpriced

Thesis

Almonty is moving from developer to producer just as China's export whitelist and defense demand keep Western tungsten tight. Sangdong's start-up and a funded Phase II should lift volumes into a market where there is little non-Chinese supply, and the shares have fallen about 50% from their April high.

Catalysts
  1. 1Q3 2026 results, expected early to mid November (Yahoo estimate Nov 6, not confirmed by the company): the first quarter with commercial Sangdong concentrate…
  2. 2Sangdong moving to round-the-clock output and first export shipments over Q4 2026.
  3. 3Phase II completion in 2027, plus execution of the up-to-$300M buyback and any new Western defense offtake deals.
Key Risks
  1. 1Valuation and tungsten price: Goldman (Neutral, $13) expects prices to normalize and the ramp to be slower than consensus, and Chinese domestic APT already f…
  2. 2Execution: Sangdong is a first-time restart since 1993, and any ramp delay or cost overrun would hit a stock with 75% to 92% annualized volatility.
  3. 3Earnings quality and dilution: Q2 net income was mostly non-cash gains, and the US$800M convertible adds leverage and potential share dilution.

The market is pricing Almonty as a volatile, price-taking miner. It trades near $12, against a 52-week high of $24.41 set on April 17, 2026. Goldman initiated at Neutral with a $13 target, arguing that strong tungsten prices and a fast ramp are already priced in. The long case rests on supply security. China controls most mine output and, per Reuters (Apr 2026), restricted 2026-27 exports to 15 approved firms. The US has no active commercial tungsten mines. Almonty is one of the few scalable producers outside China, and its offtake with Global Tungsten & Powders was extended by six years with 40% more contracted volume and about 6.3% better pricing (per Q2 release). Q2 2026 (reported Aug 11, in C$) showed revenue up 498% to C$43.0M and Adjusted EBITDA of C$17.6M, versus a loss a year ago. Net income of C$181.8M is flattered by C$173.1M of non-cash derivative gains, so Adjusted EBITDA is the cleaner read. The company holds about C$1.2B of cash after an US$800M convertible, and has announced a buyback of up to $300M. Sangdong received its final operating certificates on Sept 21 and is moving into commercial production. Phase II is targeted for 2027, with capacity of up to 1.2M tonnes of ore a year. Five analysts' targets average about $24 (per Google Finance, late Sep), roughly double the current price. For the case to work, three things have to hold. Chinese export curbs must stay in place. Western APT must stay near current levels, around US$3,075/mtu in late July per Fastmarkets-linked data. Sangdong must ramp on schedule.
Updates Since Publication
  1. Oct 13, 2026 · Price 11.08

Weekly check-in: Weakened. Sangdong ramp on track, but Q3 revenue catalyst slips and Western APT softens Operations are moving roughly as the case needs. Per CEO Lewis Black at the Oct 7 investment forum, Sangdong is producing, and the first concentrate shipment is booked for Oct 24. The commercial-revenue catalyst has slipped, though: DA Davidson, per an Oct 12 note, expects project revenue and EBITDA only in Q4 2026, so Q3 results due in November will probably not show the first-commercial-sales quarter the case relies on. The Western APT condition is also slipping, and the shares are now close to the case's stop level.
