AWS Acceleration Outruns the Capex Worry

Thesis

AWS is re-accelerating (37% growth in Q2 2026, with 36.8% operating margin) while the stock sits about 9% below its August high on capex and free cash flow worries. If AWS growth holds and the $220B capex converts into backlog and margin, current earnings estimates look too low and the multiple too cautious.

How These Levels Were Set

Entry 255.00: a pullback level near the 50-day moving average, quoted at about 255.84 on Oct 5 per Tradingpedia and about 257 on Oct 19 per Invezz. It is below the Oct 19 intraday price near 262 and above the 250.00 Oct 16 close. Price target 331.00: the Street average 12-month target of $331.46 per stockanalysis.com ($328.91 per Barchart). It is about 31x consensus 2027 EPS of $10.59, so it assumes the multiple holds as estimates rise. Morgan Stanley's $350 is a higher reference. Stop 245.00: below the 250.00 cluster (Oct 16 close, 200-day average of about 250.10 per Tradingpedia on Oct 5) and below the roughly $246 quote cited by 24/7 Wall St on Oct 1. Support 250.00: the Oct 16 close and the 200-day average zone. Resistance 287.20: the 52-week high set around Aug 3, 2026. The 52-week low is 196.00 (Feb 17, 2026).

Catalysts
  1. 1Q3 2026 results on Oct 29 after the close (call 5:00 pm ET per company release): AWS growth versus the 37% prior quarter, and operating income versus the $22…
  2. 2Q4 2026 guidance and 2027 capex commentary at the Q3 call and at Q4 results (about Feb 4, 2027, date unconfirmed): evidence that backlog supports the spend.
  3. 3AWS capacity and customer updates: OpenAI model hosting, the Meta Graviton deal, and Bedrock adoption. Amazon said Bedrock customer spend in Q2 exceeded all…
  4. 4Holiday-quarter retail execution, including grocery and everyday essentials, same-day delivery speed, and the lapping of the Prime Day shift in Q4.
  5. 5Morgan Stanley's 2027 robotics catalyst: it estimates $2B to $4B of annual savings for every 10% of units moved through robotics-enabled fulfillment.
Key Risks
  1. 1Capex and cash flow: 2026 capex of about $220B has pushed trailing free cash flow to minus $7.6B per the Q2 release. A further capex raise without matching A…
  2. 2Earnings quality: Q2 GAAP EPS of $5.75 included $53.4B of pre-tax non-operating gains, mainly Anthropic. Consensus Q3 EPS is only about $1.90 to $2.03, imply…
  3. 3Relative cloud growth: at 37%, AWS grew slower than Azure (43%) and Google Cloud (82%) in the same quarter per IndMoney, so share loss in AI workloads remain…
  4. 4Guidance and sentiment: Q3 revenue guidance was below the Street, the stock has already moved about 5% on a single analyst note, and it fell 4.7% last week.…
  5. 5Cost and supply: higher memory costs were cited for the capex increase, and AI demand concentration in a few labs (Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta) creates counterpa…

What the market is pricing in: the shares trade near 262 intraday on Oct 19, 2026 (prior close 250.00), against a 52-week range of 196.00 to 287.20. The debate is the cost of AI build-out. Per the Q2 release and CNBC, 2026 capex is guided to about $220B, Q2 capex was $54.2B (up 68%), and trailing-twelve-month free cash flow turned negative at minus $7.6B. Q3 revenue guidance of $197B to $202B also came in below the $204.1B LSEG consensus, which Amazon attributed to the Prime Day shift into June. Per Amazon, adjusting for that shift adds nearly 400 basis points to Q3 growth. Why the long side may be right: demand is outrunning supply and profitability is rising with it. Per the Q2 release, AWS revenue grew 37% to $42.2B, the fastest in 18 quarters and well above the roughly 31% consensus. Per CNBC, AWS operating income was $16.6B versus a $13.6B StreetAccount consensus, a 36.8% margin, and AWS is nearly 61% of group operating profit. Per the release, the AI business and the custom chips business each passed a $25B annual run rate, both growing at triple-digit rates. Group operating income was $27.5B, up 43%. Q3 operating income guidance of $22.5B to $26.5B compares with $17.4B a year earlier, so even the low end implies a large step-up. Per CNBC, AWS also announced new arrangements with Meta and OpenAI in Q2. Valuation: per Barchart, consensus EPS is $8.03 for 2026 and $10.59 for 2027. Per stockanalysis.com, the forward P/E is about 27.7. Trailing EPS of about $12.4 is inflated by $53.4B of pre-tax Anthropic gains in Q2, so forward figures are the cleaner reference. Morgan Stanley (Oct 19, $350 target, Top Pick) models AWS growth of 47% in 2027 and 42% in 2028, and says the stock trades at about 15 times its 2028 earnings. The average Street target is about $331 per stockanalysis.com, with 56 of 59 analysts at buy-equivalent per Tradingpedia. What has to be true: AWS growth stays above the mid-30s percent range as capacity comes online. AWS margins hold in the mid-30s or better despite higher depreciation and memory costs. Retail margins keep expanding through robotics and delivery-speed gains. Capex then converts into revenue within a few quarters, so free cash flow recovers in 2027 rather than staying negative.
Updates Since Publication
  1. Oct 19, 2026 · Price 263.38

Weekly check-in: On Track. Morgan Stanley's AWS upgrade lifts sentiment, but capex and FCF questions remain open The main new item is Morgan Stanley's Oct 19 move to Top Pick, with a $350 target and higher AWS forecasts. That is supportive of the AWS-acceleration leg. The same note lifts its capex forecasts sharply, which works against the case's claim that free cash flow recovers in 2027. No new company results or guidance have arrived, so the Oct 29 print remains the real test. Shares rose about 5% on the day to roughly 263, a move driven by one analyst note and not by new fundamentals.

  2. Oct 26, 2026 · Price 248.94

Weekly check-in: On Track. Pre-print week: AWS bar is clear, but 2027 capex fears grow Nothing reported since the last check-in, so the thesis evidence is unchanged and the Oct 29 print is the test. The Morgan Stanley bounce has faded, with a 4.6% drop on Oct 22 and a close of 248.00 on Oct 23 and about 249 intraday on Oct 26. That is below the 255 entry level and well above the 220 stop. Pre-earnings notes broadly support the AWS leg. The main new pushback is UBS's view that 2027 capex could pass $300B and leave free cash flow near zero or negative.
