Thesis

Meta is funding a record AI build with debt, a new non-voting share class and a free cash flow that has turned negative. At the same time, youth-safety bans and settlements add costs and cap engagement, and Reality Labs keeps losing about $4B a quarter. At about 22x forward earnings, the market is paying for ad growth that has to cover all of this.

How These Levels Were Set

Reference last price is about 648.85, the Oct 22 close per Yahoo. Entry 681.07 is the Oct 22 intraday high, a bounce level. Resistance 697.52 is the Oct 21 close that the stock gapped down from. Price target 596 is 20x the roughly 29.8 forward EPS implied by CNBC's 22.05x forward P/E at 656.57 (656.57 / 22.05). It sits near the 585.61 close on Jul 29 before the Q2 report. Extended downside reference is the 52-week low of 520.26 (Mar 27 2026). Stop 713.22 is the Oct 21 intraday high, just above the 697.52 resistance. Support 639.69 is the Oct 22 intraday low. A break below it opens the path toward 585.61. The 52-week high is 779.82 (Sep 24 2026) and the post-earnings spike high was 748.80 per Robinhood.

Catalysts
  1. 1Q4 2026 earnings, expected late January or early February 2027 (date unconfirmed): first 2027 capex and expense outlook, and the ad impression and price trend.
  2. 2Financing steps: any debt raise or Class C share issuance to fund the build, and the Q4 free cash flow print.
  3. 3Australia Federal Court action against Meta over the under-16 ban, announced Oct 21 2026, with the Malaysia ban in January 2027 and the UK ban from spring 2027.
  4. 4Reality Labs Q4 loss, implied at $5.2B-$6.2B by the full-year guide, against the promised narrowing to about $15B in 2027.
  5. 5US youth-harm trials and state attorney general actions, which Meta flagged in its Q2 filing as possible material losses.
Key Risks
  1. 1Ad engine strength: revenue grew 26%, ad impressions rose 10%, ad prices rose 14%, and Q4 guidance of $73B-$76B is above consensus per reports. Growth could…
  2. 2Sentiment and analyst support: about 90% of 69 ratings are Buy, and targets were raised after Q3 (Mizuho to $950, DA Davidson to $800). Shorting after a roug…
  3. 3Balance sheet is not distressed: cash roughly matches debt, operating cash flow was $32.79B in Q3, and the Class C share gives equity funding. Leverage looks…
  4. 4Legal overhang may be largely recognised: the $9.9B charge is booked, management still expects 2026 operating income excluding it to exceed 2025, and Reality…
  5. 5Bans mainly hit under-16s, a small share of ad revenue. AI could also improve ad targeting and conversion, which would raise rather than lower ad revenue.

What the market is pricing in: Q3 revenue of $64.6B, up 26% and above the $63.37B estimate, with Q4 guided to $73B-$76B (per Benzinga and Meta's Q3 release, Oct 21 2026). The stock trades near 22x forward earnings per CNBC, and the Yahoo average price target is about $833. The Street is treating spending as a temporary drag on a durable ad machine. Why the short may be right, balance sheet: per the Q2 10-Q, Meta had $84.0B of notes outstanding and $349.31B of non-cancelable commitments, with $81.65B due in 2027. After a $25B bond sale in May, cash of $82.45B now roughly equals debt of $83.7B (per AOL/Benzinga on the Q3 release). Q2 free cash flow was only $784M, and year-to-date free cash flow fell to $11.05B from $29.51B (per Investomine). Management declined to give a 2027 capex outlook in July. The new Class C non-voting share is an additional funding route, though the CFO said there are no specific financing plans. Profit quality: Q3 Family of Apps operating profit fell 31.4% to $17.12B. Q3 included a $9.9B legal charge, and full-year 2026 expenses are now guided to $175B-$179B (per Meta's Q3 release). Q2 operating margin was 31% versus 43% a year earlier, and Q2 included $1.18B of severance for the roughly 8,000-person May cut. Headcount savings are real but small next to a $130B+ capex program. Regulation: Australia's under-16 ban has been in force since December 2025, and the government said on Oct 21 it will sue Meta and others for non-enforcement (per Bloomberg via TradingView). The UK plans an under-16 ban, with first rules possibly from spring 2027 (per CNBC, Jun 2026). Malaysia has pushed its ban to January 2027. A U.S. state settlement requires teen limits such as two hours a day and no infinite scroll (per Think Global Health). Reality Labs: it lost $4.13B in Q3 on $443M of revenue. Meta guides a $18B-$19B loss for 2026 and about $15B for 2027, so the drag persists after roughly $88B of cumulative losses through Q2 (per vr.org). AI and ads: your view is that AI assistants pull attention away from feeds and ads. Q3 data does not show this yet, since impressions rose 10% and price per ad 14%. This is the least evidenced leg and the one to watch in engagement and impression metrics. What has to be true: the 2027 capex guide rises again with no matching revenue acceleration, free cash flow stays negative, and legal or regulatory costs recur. Any slowdown in impressions would then compress the multiple.
