Thesis

SPHR is priced as a scalable venue platform, but Las Vegas still depends on one show whose ticket yield is fading while the expansion plan needs more capital and content. Q2 profit already fell as revenue grew, which is the pattern a high-fixed-cost venue shows when utilization or pricing slips.

Catalysts
  1. 1Q3 2026 earnings, expected Nov 10 per TipRanks: watch Sphere segment AOI and per-show revenue after Oz 2.0 launched Sept 25.
  2. 2National Harbor third-party financing terms, which management said would come in the near term.
  3. 3Metallica residency from October 2026 and the Q4 Vegas season: a weak Q4 would undercut the 'substantial growth' message.
Key Risks
  1. 1The Oz slowdown may be seasonal or a pricing choice, and management guided to substantial calendar-year growth.
  2. 2The stock is high beta with heavy call buying and a $177 consensus target, so a new venue announcement (promised by early 2027) could force a squeeze.
  3. 3Franchise and leaseback structures move venue capex off the balance sheet, which weakens the leverage argument.

SPHR fell 13.6% to about $111 on Oct 5 after Craig-Hallum cut it to Hold, yet the consensus target is still about $177. Even after the drop, forward EV/revenue is roughly 3.3x, which Yahoo Finance says is above the three-year average. The market is paying for expansion optionality on top of a venue that leans on one production. The latest print shows the strain. Q2 revenue rose 11% to $313.6M, but adjusted operating income fell 17% to $50.9M and the operating loss widened to $61.3M. The EPS beat came from a lower loss than expected, not from rising profit. Ticket sales for The Wizard of Oz have slowed from about $40M a month to under $30M a month since June, with ticket volume roughly steady. That points to weaker yield, and yield drops straight through to margin at a venue with fixed costs. The capital needs are growing. Recent filings show about $961M of debt against $521M of cash. National Harbor still needs third-party financing, to supplement $200M of incentives, and that deal requires a build-to-suit leaseback structure. Management is also funding Oz 2.0 and Rocky Horror (2027) before utilization is proven. Macro matters too: Las Vegas discretionary spend and financing costs both affect this model. The case needs Oz yield to keep decaying, Oz 2.0 to fail to reverse it, and financing to come at a cost.

Weekly check-in: Strengthened. Oz demand evidence firmed up; sell-side targets cut, but squeeze and seasonality risks remain The core of the thesis, fading Oz yield at a one-show venue, picked up independent support this week. Craig-Hallum's Oct 5 downgrade said Fiscal Q3 ticket sales are tracking below Street estimates and that the Sept 25 Oz 2.0 update has not meaningfully improved the trend. StoneX, which stayed at Buy, cut its target to $125 from $175 and said daily ticket sales are down about 10% from the Q2 level. Oz 2.0 has not yet reversed the decay, but there is no hard data until the Q3 print, and the shares have already moved below the entry level.

  2. Oct 20, 2026 · Price 102.9

Weekly check-in: On Track. Guggenheim trims target, no new Oz data; stock near entry, below $110.8 Little new fundamental evidence arrived this week. The main item is Guggenheim's Oct 14 cut of its target to $180 from $208, though it kept its Buy rating. That supports the thesis point that the Street is lowering Oz-driven estimates, but no company filing, guidance change or Oz 2.0 data has appeared. The thesis still rests on Q3 results, so I'd call it on track rather than stronger.
